Born in 1970 in Seattle, Tonia Ralston always had a drive for painting. Defining her style in college, she graduated from Whitman College in Washington State with a degree in studio art. After teaching for ten years in special education, she moved to Jackson Hole. Like many locals, Ralston is fascinated by the outdoors and in particular fishing. Painting with acrylics on birch wood, Ralston captures simple moments in time with fish life so that she may revisit this same experience with nature over and over again. "I apply multiple fine layers to combine colors in defined areas to make up the surface character of the fish," she describes of her technique. Tonia continues to concentrate on fish as her subject matter, capturing their natural beauty and elusive ways.
