Kim creates her work through the use of Polaroid transfers. She uses images from her various travels and manipulates them with different media to create her unique look. “I’m drawn to the unpredictability of the medium and the fact that the creative process doesn’t stop after I snap the picture.”
“The latitude for experimentation is enormous so I never feel confined even though the size of the film itself is a physical boundary. I actually enjoy this boundary because I’m forced to study my subjects more closely. I often choose to focus on a part of the subject rather than the whole. As a result, the viewer sees only a glimpse and is left with time and space to contemplate the rest of the story.”
“These tiny vignettes take on a timeworn quality that gives me a sense of looking into the past. The images are soft and faded, like a good memory, or possibly a hazy dream. I strive to make simple subjects appear timeless and the ordinary worthy of a long second look.”
