Smith is originally from Idaho Falls where he felt a connection with the landscape from a very early age. He attended Ricks College and Utah State where he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. The Tetons, Snake River, and local wetlands continue to be sources of inspiration. Smith has participated in many local shows and auctions.
